Lawmakers Mull Which Amendment 4 Offenses to Exclude from Voter Rolls

A panel told the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee that questions remain over which specific offenses might be considered to be “sex” offenses and what qualifies a sentence as being satisfied for the purposes of rights restoration.

“There is some ambiguity at this point,” said Jack Campbell, state attorney for the 2nd Judicial Circuit, asking whether crimes like manslaughter or certain sexually motivated crimes would qualify under the language of the ballot initiative. “We don’t understand exactly what the law is.”

Paul Lux, the supervisor of elections in Okaloosa County and president of the Florida State Association of Supervisor of Elections, said the confusion meant that he and other supervisors of elections could not always give people straight answers when they asked if they were eligible to re-register: “Our answer unfortunately right now is ‘We’re not really sure.’”

    Think About This:

so attempted murder is not actually murder so they should have the rights restored and attempted sex offence is an attempt not actually

So the idiots that wrote the proposal have no clue how to implement it? Figures…

I have been a registered sex offender since 1997 and I have NEVER been convicted of a crime or EVER been to prison. FACT!
To think that after all of this time I may now lose my right to vote is an Orwellian / Kafkaesque dilemma of unending personal jeopardy that I find hard to believe! Just when I think I’ve seen it all or that we’ve reached a “highwater mark” of short sighted, poorly crafted or ineffective legislation along comes this Amendment 4 back door attack.

      Douglas,

I think you are mis-reading amendment 4, it will not take away your right to vote if you had adjudication withheld and are not a felon

I hope you’re right. I had read something about the state government wanting to exclude sex offenders from the Amendment 4 reinstatement and even apply it retroactively to people like myself as part of some implementation compromise.

Restore the voting rights of all ex felons ( and just leave it at that ) – includes everyone across the board with no technical exclusions. Why can’t it just be that simple and not get into these technicalities. Once any person finishes their sentence regardless of the crime, then their full rights are automatically restored. Save yourselves from unnecessary headaches and confusions with simplicity.
