Marion County hires Orlando firm to defend its sex-offender residency rules in federal court

The Florida Action Committee, a group that advocates for people on the registry, filed the suit on August 11, 2026, in U.S. District Court in Tallahassee, case 4:26-cv-00388. The complaint sues Mark Glass in his official capacity as commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the agency that runs the registry. The complaint also names 33 counties, including Marion, and 17 cities. Marion was served Aug. 26.

Marion County commissioners on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, authorized County Attorney Matthew G. Minter to hire the Orlando firm Roper, Townsend & Sutphen to defend the county. The posted record shows a motion by Commissioner Michelle Stone, seconded by Vice Chair Matt McClain, carried 5-0. The agenda listed no new appropriation. The firm’s Sept. 11 engagement letter bills by the hour: $212 for partners and senior attorneys, $173 for associates, and $106 for paralegals. Work shared with other county defendants the firm represents will be split. Work done only for Marion will be billed in full.

Thank you for wasting taxpayers’ money because you hate us so much, you would go to the depths of Hell to keep us on the registry or be allowed to live in a safe environment to take care of our families.

Yes, our families are affected as well, and do not try and say it is the registrants fault your family suffers. Yes, we have caused suffering to our family. So, you jump on the bandwagon and make them suffer even more?
How many decades do we suffer, even though we might not have re-offended in over 30 years, we are still treated like we are daily on the prowl for our next victim. I cannot speak for anyone else, but if I wanted a victim, I could, but I have not re-offended in 35 years. I am pretty sure the stats state that the majority of arrests have nothing to do with re-offending, but tripping us up on laws, statues and ordinances that no one else in the World have to deal or comply with.

I second this! I honestly believe (my opinion) they know deep down the TRUTH but greed prevails integrity/fairness!
