Member Submission – Floriduh – 6 May 2019
The following was sent by a member to the Orlando Sentinel:
I read with much interest in today’s Sentinel two articles…”Mom calls for change in prison’s practice” and “Lawmakers slap cruel price tag on democracy”. For some reason…could it possibly be political…Florida has a propensity for establishing laws, policies, and practices that go against all professional studies and recommendations. A mom’s plea for revision of prison practices after her son, who had recently written home about his looking forward to being reunited with his family and with only 18 months remaining on his sentence, chose to hang himself after months of solitary confinement. At best such practice is ineffective per recent studies, but Florida chooses to ignore professional advice. And then there is the Florida Fourth Amendment that restores ex-felon voting rights. Such a policy, overwhelmingly approved by voters, has been shown to have a positive impact on helping disenfranchised citizens be reunited with their communities. But with Florida policies that make it next to impossible to get a decent wage paying job, the Republican legislators heap on additional restrictions that makes voting restoration next to impossible in many cases. Thus Tallahassee thumbs its nose at the Florida voters. I have been a lifelong Republican but I find it embarrassing and next to impossible to support a party that seems to specialize in ‘shooting itself in its foot’.

Well done. Thank you for taking the time to write and send that.
When I saw the two articles in today’s paper I could not help myself…I had to say something, even putting it ahead of my morning devotions. Are Florida legislators really this stupid or is it an organized effort to disenfranchise Florida citizens whom they are afraid will vote the “Tallahassee swamp’ out of office?
All parents of so-called sex offenders can exert pressure for change in the laws.
One step is to organize themselves into a cohesive activist political body.
One action they can take is to pubicize and observe a boycott of all products and services of either Florida or the entire United States.
Glad someone is being proactive but he was kind of all over the place and didn’t finish his point.
If you are going to write to someone that you want to take our side or listen to what we have gone through, please complete one thought and the adjoining consequences before moving on to the next point, and what you want them to do about it.
Allow the people in power of our lives to understand just how bad it is
‘No hope’, thanks for your response but the Orlando Sentinel limits commentary to 250 words max. I have had my letters rejected by the Sentinel because they were too long and I would not reduce them because the reduction would dilute the message too much.
Great job captain!
Solitary confinement is like putting your kid in the closet turning off the lights and closing the door. It teaches nothing and it creates a mentality of unstableness, ptsd and paranoia so that will never be the same ever again.
I did two stints in the hole. One because I couldnt pee in a cup with another man watching me and second time because I called an acquaintance brother to let him know he went to the hole so he wouldnt visit on visitation weekend. Then they left me in there because I wouldnt rat on the officer who gave me the number.
Only way i got out was because the visitation sgt worked the hole and saw me in there. He spoke up for me and it still another week or so.
It messes with your head but you have to find ways to get through it.
Thankyou Capt
You always seem to have great insight. And it is true for some reason the Republican Party does not want us to vote.
My whole family is republican my grand mother who just passed at 107 years old in April. Would only vote republican even tho I explained to her what happens
And she strongly hated ( disagreed )
More the truth , that all these laws that are affecting me after the fact she said is not right and unconditional , yet she would vote republican. Lol
