Miami-Dade Encampment of Homeless Sex Offenders Continues to Grow

The dozens of registered sex offenders sent to live alongside the railroad tracks at the corner of Northwest 71st Street and 36th Court in Miami continues to grow. The number of people living homeless, in cars, tents or on the ground, without any shelter, sanitation, bathrooms or potable water has reached one hundred and sixty five!

This is the same once infamous encampment that was once located under the Julia Tuttle Causeway but disbanded when the city fenced off the bridge. This is the same encampment that was located in the city of Shorecrest until a commissioner decided to put in a “pocket park”, forcing the inhabitants to move again. This is the same encampment that was displaced from the area around the River Park Trailer Park after county and city officials decided a shelter for at risk youth ironically called “The Bridge” was actually a school and off limits as well.

The City and County decided that the current warehouse district and this strip of land alongside active railroad tracks is just remote, hidden and inhumane enough to stick over 150 people and that’s where they are and will remain until something is done to put an end to this ineffective and dangerous practice.
