Miami-Dade Librarians Required to Review Sex Offender Registry Weekly

In an interesting story about “hundreds of criminal acts” taking place in libraries on what must have been a very slow news day, South Florida’s Channel 10 News discussed some of the many crimes taking place in the County’s libraries.

The story, which can be found here, states:

“Once a week, librarians are required get on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement sex offender web site and become familiar with the registered sex offenders and predators within a 2-mile radius of their library branch.”

It would be interesting to find out how many registered sex offenders were responsible for the crimes that took place in libraries.

Knowing that most offenses are committed by first time offenders, it’s far, far more likely that the crime would be committed by someone not on the registry. In which case; wouldn’t the time spent studying the pictures on the registry be more effective monitoring what goes on in the library?

Would it not make more sense, and uniformity throughout the State, to force all sex offenders to wear a scarlet RSO on their chest? This could save thousands of dollars in wasted productivity and taxpayer dollars. This way, everybody could hustle their children away as soon as they saw those letters approaching!
