Miami New Times: Miami-Dade Will Close Sex Offender Camp by May 6, Threatens Jail Time for Stragglers

Since 2014, a colony of homeless sex offenders has been rapidly growing by the railroad tracks near Hialeah. Nobody wants them there, including the dozens who call the ramshackle camp home. Everyone, from the Homeless Trust to the ACLU to the county commission, agrees the encampment is a public health and safety hazard. But for years, the sex offenders have said that restrictive county laws mean they have nowhere else to legally live and that county officials have failed to solve the problem.

With the May 6 deadline quickly approaching, outreach groups have been working with the sex offenders to find new places to live. But thanks to stringent local laws governing where sex offenders can live, many homeless advocates worry they have few alternatives to their camp near the intersection of NW 71st Street and 36th Court. According to the mayor’s letter, Miami-Dade Police officers have the option to “remove” those who stay, a clause that refers to a local law permitting police to arrest those who trespass on county property.

If they have a home but the ordinance does not let them live in it, then for all practical purposes they are homeless.

I would like to know just where are these folk suppose to go and I want to know what on earth or the heavens above are the Miami-Dade county commissioners and Teflon ron thinking. The County commission can remove ron crook from the housing authority and fix the homeless problem, but they won’t. I mean what are these folks suppose to do or go. It’s a vicious cycle. First off these PEOPLE have no jobs, which in turn leads to no money, no money means they can’t pay rent or other bills. What’s it going to take to open the eyes of these county commissioners that ron crook is doing nothing for the county except for bleeding them dry and all he’s doing is picking up his pay check and causing bigger problems to not only the county and the city, but also to ALL citizens.

Many of these people have jobs.
Many of them own homes they can’t live in.

Does the fact of that statement help these PEOPLE out? NO! I’m not trying to be a smart ass or start an argument. It just pisses me off that the powers that be can’t fight their way out of a paper bag… and WE are suppose to trust THEM??????? HA-HA good laugh.

I’m not following what you are saying.

It helps them. They are employed and they have a place to live but for the ordinance.
If they were chronically homeless or could not afford housing under any conditions, it would negate our argument that the ordinance is causing them to be homeless.

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. The “ordinance” is causing these people to be homeless, even though they may own homes they cannot live in, therefore it makes them homeless. Now they must find a new place to live other than the encampment, but where, and if they are at the encampment after the deadline, they will have a new address……. the county jail. I hope you see what i’m trying to say, now. Between the ordinance and arresting everyone still lingering at the encampment after this deadline, what are they suppose to do? They can’t count on the commissioners or the housing authority.

Time to just stay in jail. On house arrest as it is.

I am a Christian, but some of the most unforgiving people are devout church goers. However, in many cases, the churches are underfunded and overwhelmed with requests for help. If local and state governments are so determined to isolate this group from society, they should be required to define and provide somewhere that they can safely live. They are citizens too.

Even Hitler gave them a place to stay.

“Worse than the Jew tobthe Nazi,” and our “civilized” society not only allows but endorses this!

      Unbelievable!

Where are the church leaders there in Miami standing up for these people and storming the city commission demanding change of these laws? The truth is, these pastors are too wimpy and spineless to stand up for what Jesus would stand up for, and that’s compassion on ALL people no matter who they are. The “law” of Jesus’ time dragged Mary Magdalene an “adulterer” (sex offender of her time) into His presence and wanted to stone her and asked Jesus what He thought. And that’s when He said the famous line “he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” And they all dropped their stones and left. You so-called Christians and church leaders In Miami should be ashamed of yourselves for knowing about this problem and doing nothing to help. God bless those in the article who they said actually are trying to help, but again they point to those ridiculous laws as preventing them from doing anything to help them. Well, it’s still technically “second chance month” as proclaimed from the white house. Why can’t they call Trump and have him move in the Feds to provide housing for them? He was threatening to do that in Chicago to stop all the violence was he not?

Typical government action. Solve a problem by creating a problem and then grant self appreciation for solving the self-caused problem. How can these bureaucrats sleep at night?

I am sure they have no problem sleeping at night, people without souls really have nothing to keep them up at night.
