MO: Marion County Sheriff Warns of Scam Targeting Sex Offenders

I know we’ve warned, and warned, and warned, and warned, but I worry that if we don’t keep putting this out there someone will miss it and there goes thousands of dollars…

The latest telephone scam making the rounds in Missouri is targeting registered sex offenders.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Missouri Sex Offender Registry has received information from offenders and neighboring county registries about the scam.

The registered sex offender is contacted by someone claiming to be a sex offender compliance officer. In a specific case, the caller identified themselves as Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Shinn.

The caller informs the offender that they are non-compliant because they failed to submit a second sample of DNA and will be arrested on a warrant.

The caller then says the warrant will be recalled if they pay a fee using pre-paid gift cards.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reminds you they do not conduct warrant arrests by phone. If you have any questions, contact your local law enforcement agency.

Until sheriffs start arresting these people, nothing will be done about the problem.
