Harley Holt was being held in a Jefferson Missouri jail on a charge of failure to register, when two other inmates beat him.
He was put into a separate cell, but his repeated requests for medical attention were ignored. Eventually, he lost conscious and was taken to the hospital where he was placed on life support and later died. His cause of death was head trauma resulting in swelling of his brain.
His mother has now filed a lawsuit against the jail and certain staff.
As a ‘sex offender’ one always has to watch their back and not count on the protection law enforcement gives others. Even some law enforcement officers can have their biases.
Its amazing to see so many ppl who are not only in support but are smart enough to look outside the box. I thank you all for the love. Harley Holt is my brother… Donna Holt my mother. This has been a long and painful battle to get ANYONE to look at this without the being judgmental and cruel because of a “label” placed on him as a 21 yr old Male whom made a bad decision to engage with a teen under the age of 18 which he did the time for as sentenced. Unfortunately… to most… “sex offender” makes ppl judge him without knowing the TRUTH behind my brothers situation nor who he was as a human being …so I appreciate the support and please keep us (especially my mother) in ur thoughts cause I have a feeling this is going to be a long, tough battle considering this prison has already attempted to cover evidence. Much love. R.I.P Harley Holt.
Praying for you and your family no one should ever have to go through this we are all human and I feel your pain for sex offenders most are not charged with violent crimes and people don’t know their story they are the only ones who do their time and yet once they get out are labeled and go through even more pain I am so sorry for the loss of your brother my heart is breaking for you and your family and you are all in my prayers I am glad your mom is standing up against the prison maybe it will shed light on how dangerous it is to be labeling people like this and eventually laws will have to change may god keep you all strong
So sad….
I guess the federal government needs to some serious updating on this document dated October 1997 where it discusses ‘VII. Offender Harassment’. It is very outdated! http://www.wsipp.wa.gov/ReportFile/1263/Wsipp_Megans-Law-A-Review-of-State-and-Federal-Legislation_Full-Report.pdf
I personally have heard of two “deaths” just in Florida. Anyone else??
Just on my case alone would be guaranteed a best seller. Hell, it has everything in it. Having a 4 way with another couple (Legal).
Witchcraft
Illegal adoption
Having Fla CPS step in 4 hours before the cops were called to “council” (prep) the alleged victim
False allegations
NO proof of allegations
Not “allowed” to present a defense
I had to do my own plea bargaining (Pub. Def. wasnt there)
My mothers will (house and $250,000) went to the “alleged victims” mother
The mother stated in open court “yes I set the SOB up–and took him for everything he’s got”
On the day of my release from probation the prosecution stated ‘The mom & daughter refused to testify– we had to get a conviction any way we could”
And there is so much more.
Yes, lets write a book.
Dear Sean
Please read. Maybe this information can help you somehow, tho I’m not a lawyer.
In Missouri v. Frye and Lafler v. Cooper, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that criminal defendants have a Sixth Amendment right to effective assistance of counsel during plea negotiations, including when they miss out on, or reject, plea bargains because of bad legal advice.
Seems is my future
God I pray she wins and sends a message holding everyone who is responsible’s feet to the fire. After my arrest in the county jail I was intentionally put into a cell with a man with known mental issues the staff knew he would assault me and he did. One of the CO’s said I told them not to put him in there. Another example of unequal protection under the law
I hope this mother wins and cleans out every pocket possible. The brutality sex offender inmates are exposed to in prison is not a hidden secret. It has been clearly known for many years. In fact, I’d say that these assaults and deaths are exactly what the warden hopes will happen. It’s what the police, district attorneys, judges, and the public as a whole hopes happens to these individuals in prison. As far as the public is concerned if a sex offender is murdered or beaten so severely that he or she is rendered a vegetable for life, they consider it just one less piece of scum to worry with. The sex offender is dehumanized at every turn by almost everyone. I hope she leaves every soul responsible without so much as a pot to piss in.
I agree with 150%, But what hurts the “Cause”, is. If she does win, And I hope she does !!. Whatever money she wins just comes from THE TAX PAYERS !!. It won’t “Hurt” anyone involved unless she can somehow get a Judge to CRIMINALLY CHARGE anyone involved in this tragedy. Yes, ANY win against anyone that harms or causes harm to another human is good, But until we can get the courts to start holding “Public Safety” employees ‘PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE”, Things are NOT going to change !!!.
My heart goes out to Ms. Holt. My son was beaten in 2014 after he was transferred from a low security unit in Texas to a max security prison. He had refused to attend or participate a SO Treatment Program class because doing so would have been an admission of deviancy and guilt and a waiver of all his parole/probation rights. For his refusal, he was re-categorized a violent offender [orig charge was on line solicitation of a girl who lied and said she was 18- no defense in Texas but no victim either] and transferred to a much higher security unit in June of 2014. When he arrived, the custodians let the fact that he was a SO get out. Within a week, he was beaten, kicked in the head and left unconscious outside of his cell. Hi cellies finally picked him up and put him in his bunk. He was in a fog for days, but finally wrote me and informed me that he had been beaten. I called the warden; I called a State Sen office; I called the state ombudsman and wrote or called everyone I could think of. Within 2 months he was beaten again, this time by 4 bubbas from the custodial staff. I continued my letters and my calls until he was placed in a safer environment and received belated care for his injuries. While we were never able to prosecute the bubbas, we did make it known that my son was being monitored by individuals from the outside who cared about him. A couple of years later when he was moved to another unit as payback for his court activism, my letter writing campaign paid dividends when the office of the Exec Director of TDCJ called me and immediately relocated my son back to his unit. My message: call, write, visit your elected officials, the system Ombudsman, the wardens, newspapers, everyone who is responsible for your loved ones. Let them know who you are, who your loved one is, that you are aware of what is happening to him and that you will do what you can to protect your loved one. God bless, Ms. Holt
“Even some law enforcement officers can have their biases.”
So, so true. When I served my time, I saw another inmate who was a good guy with a sex charge, get dragged into the lobby of our dorm and was ganged up on by 5 officers for “allegedly” writing his victim with no proven evidence.
Another true story. When I first got processed at Lake Butler, one of the “old school” sergeants was walking around the dorm and when he got to my bunk, he flat out asked me why I was in there. I told him it was just an online sting. His response was “you in here for touchin’ younguns? (in a old slow southern drawl), well good luck boy cuz you’re gonna need it.”
And then when I was being released from Mayo, when they release you, they take you up front and the captain asks you a series of questions to verify who you are. The last question was, state the county of your arrest and your charge. Which I did. When I said my charge, one of the officers in the room piped up and said “you pervert.” And without even thinking about it, I just instantly said “we all have our issues sir.” It’s like God just took over my mouth and that came out. Because the real me would’ve blasted him about his gay brother that also worked there. Or I could’ve railed on him about being a redneck mofo or something. But I never would’ve made it out of that prison and I just wanted to get out of there with my family waiting outside. But that response shocked him. He just shut up real quick and said “You’re right about that.” In a very low muttered tone like he had just been put in his place.
**That’s just a sampling of the stories I have. And I’m sure there are thousands of other stories from people that are members on here.
Is there anyone out there who would be willing to write a book about our plight and maybe use a compilation of our stories from prison or our daily lives or something like that? Or do a documentary that could be put on major national networks? This side of our story needs to be put out there with a media blitz or something.
@MJ
Excellent idea about publishing a book with stories of what has happened to us all. I like your example of how God worked on your behalf. Stories like that show people how a problem was solved and they take interest in in.
This idea could be a way for us to obtain funds to help defray the cost of litigation for us all.
Good idea MJ.
Yeah I think it would work in so many good ways. I hate writing and typing lol but I’ll sit there and dictate my story to someone who could write and publish or film. I just don’t know how to start a process like that.
Just a reminder folks, since the first prison ever to come about say 1500s-1600s sex offenders have been brutalized, murdered, prisoners, guards, COs and the like
have been brutalizing sex offenders for some where around 450-550 years. Stories about brutalized, murdered Sex offenders have been written about and published for just as long, brutalized, murdered Sex offenders not incarcerated have the same stories for just as long and nothing is gonna change that ever.
Unbelievably sad. I fully support this mother and I’ll pray heads roll! If they (legislators) want to incarcerate people for technical violations of a policy which is ineffective they should at the very least be responsible for the safety of those they incarcerate. Would be great if she could sue the governor for signing the laws which have created such a policy to begin with. Im praying for this mother to remain strong and for her sons soul to be at peace.
Really a sick world in which we live.
