One sure way to lose a popularity contest is to fight for the rights of convicted sex offenders. But The National Sex Offender Registry, which was established during an era of panic over crime and child danger, has come with a host of unintended consequences. Sociologist Emily Horowitz is one of a handful of academics and researchers who speaking out against the registry, showing how it’s yet another blunt instrument of “tough on crime” 1990s legislation and ultimately does more to ruins lives than to protect kids.

Hurts more people than it helps.
Seems FAC has some good articles on their site and one needs to understand also about the registry as a whole. While comments on many advocate sites are good one should understand the modus type operandi of conviction with this registry issue, whether one had a child victim or was induced by law enforcement pretending as a safety measure of inducement. That in many ways doesn’t seem to tread water , there is always a catch to much of this sad ordeal.
Why do you think they give some plea deals. A bit of bible study will tell one that. Lets say one gave a plea or was given a ruse of a plea deal in these sexual matters .They get put on probation. Some pictures are found one may get prison time but they still have to go thru sex registry classes which are required. Than after one completes the class the parole or probation officer or prison counselor calls one back in and present a paper to one that says they knew they were talking to a child via the computer which is how most of these offenses are done today… if one signs that paper… you are under the state for as long as they want you to be which could be for life.
That little signing of that paper is signing one’s life away. Do not sign that forum they present as it is another ruse just like much of this sex registry is. So yes the prgistry is painful for one to go thru and even the word brings out the worst of rape senerio when one doesn’t actually know the whole story.
Sure I’m in favor of baning much or all of this registry as I am sure everyone wants much of this banned in this type of pre-judgment ordeal. One wonders who’s behavior is the worst, the one that set the person up or the person themself. That is not the way even Roman’s 13 goes so who was showing respect in many of these ordeals?
Disguising to promote pre-judgment is evil in itself. No wonder Hittler blew his brains out. Declaration of Independence in this issue doesn’t give liberty it seems, and the Government should be ashamd of themself for even voting or coming up with something like this that comes right out of hells kitchen.
I can agree that if you want to be hated and harassed, just advocate for effective laws for sex crimes. I felt God calling me into that roll almost 20 years ago ( seems hard to believe it was that long ago)
I felt sure that with all the experts proving these laws harmful and the people who were working so hard to get the truth out about recidivism that the politicians would stop using making more and more laws as an easy way to stir up the public and get votes. So many lives destroyed as a way to get elected. I also thought they would run out of ways to add punishment and banishment to the law of the land for those deemed sex offenders. None of that has proven true. It boggles the mind to see how low some politicians will sink to get easy publicity. Thank you to all of those who continue the fight to get truth and reality out to the public. It is a hard, ugly fight but millions of people in America are counting on your sucess.

Mankind’s ability to inflict cruelty and revenge on one another, especially when done in the name of “justice,” never ceases to amaze me.

I agree it is cruel and unusual to punish someone forever who has already served their time in prison or what the judge deemed fair in the sentencing part. This causes inabilities to get employment, housing, participate in gyms, clubs, public activities… for FOREVER. I am also a survivor of sexual abuse so do not speak of this lightly. Even murder doesnt have lifetime registry. And all of us have done wrong and are in need of forgiveness in our humanity. Please remove the lifetime registry……
I think this strict law in Florida is nothing short of ridiculous. Just because you get bad pics, by accident, you are automatically guilty. If many of these people actually went looking for the illegal pics, I could understand. My question is, “Whatever happened to Innocent Until Proven Guilty”?
I can’t help but feel like Florida is looking to make innocent people into convicted felons. My husband spent many years creating a very good life for us, only to be convicted of Sex Offenses, because someone put these pics onto the Web. I can’t help but wonder if FDLE is behind this, to make more money. Otherwise, they would go after the people who create these pics.

They want the public to be safe from us, those who have served our time and want to move on with our lives. (What is left of it). On the other hand, when we are attacked physically, mentally or are a victim of a crime by the hands of someone who found us on the registry, law enforcement usually (From personal experience) turns a blind eye.
So yeah the registry hurts us, our families, loved ones and even our neighbors when someone stirs up emotions with community notifcations and the news banging on your door for a comment. And yet we rarely get a court to say any of that is punishment.
I have seen comments on here that were allowed to be posted, stating things like, “No you shouldn’t be on the registry, you should be dead if it was up to me”. And from a few posted stories on FAC site, some recently acted on those threats, killing someone on the registry in his own driveway. I guess he was just another statistic huh?
I thank all the people who speak for us on our behalf. We are rarely heard and we need voices like FAC, and other groups and inviduals who have family members or friends on the registry to be OUR voices.
Nan one wonders who uses common sense today or who is naked with much of this registry burden. A house divided cannot stand. Did one of our Presidents say that one wonders.Should moral ethics be used even better understanding or who has wisdom today or just maybe this is a registry of a political game of bearing false witness.
One person says its all about the database. Guess that person’s waiting for his crown of spic n” spam. Sure this registry should be erassed as it is as unjust and deceptive as pepto busmo” for bowel control. Was 911 bad enough and now the enticements of men and some women caught up in this web of punitive cult prostitution of deranged justice. So who is judging righteously. Should one compare a bank robber to a sex offender or the person that falsifys’ a check with someone elses name on it?
Yes this registry has many loops and edges to transform a man to nothing in many of these issues. Sure many can preach out in California, Florida, Virginia, Michigan and many other states but when it all comes down to it who is the real victim. The one that layed this upon another or set the snare trap or the one that got caught up or wrapped up in this trap. Talk about precepts and principals. Who is just as guilty. Many don’t even understand the “why” of a plea deal.
