The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), established by the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2003, by the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it will launch a sex offender register to “name and shame rapists and offenders of other forms of violence against persons

Director General of NAPTIP, Julie Okah, made clear in several statements that the purpose was to “name and shame” individuals with sexual offenses.

“By the end of this month (July), we are going to be launching the sex offenders register. This register is going to name and shame all the rapist in Nigeria.”

“At the time we begin to name and shame them, I believe that it will send a strong message to those who are planning to rape and they will desist from that heinous crime.”

There was no mention of whether the the registry will appear on a public website, the duration of registration or what other restrictions and requirements will come with registration.
