A New York political candidate is proposing a new registry, similar to the sex offender registry, only it will be for the mentally ill.
Republican J.C. Polanco called for “mandating that state hospitals and correctional facilities inform the city immediately when anyone is released from their institutions who is suffering from severe mental illness so that our neighbors, our communities and our city can be aware of who dwells among us.”
Although the registry would not be public – only available to police, it would require that people on it be evaluated for a possible court order requiring them to accept treatment under Kendra’s Law.
The NYCLU has already issued a statement on this idea: “This proposal would further stigmatize people with mental illness as being inherently dangerous. It would erode their rights to privacy and due process, and would unfairly and unnecessarily impact their loved ones.”
Brilliant and what a money saver!
Just signup everyone in the government to start with and then move right along to everyone in law enforcement. That should keep them happy with some “busy work” so they feel like they are actually doing something.
I say while we are ignoring silly things like global warming let’s concentrate on things that really matter like this POS idea!
Republican J.C. Polanco is, in my opinion, mentally ill for suggesting such a registry. Perhaps he should be the first to be listed.
