OK: Oklahoma may allow mentally or cognitively impaired to be removed from registry.

Legislation in Oklahoma may give people who are cognitively impaired a path towards removal from the sex offender registry. HB 3606 allows a person to be considered for removal of the requirement to register as a sex offender if the person, or a legal guardian acting on behalf of the person, can provide to the court documentation that the person has a permanent medical or cognitive impairment that prevents the person from understanding or complying with the requirements of the Sex Offenders Registration Act.

This is similar to legislation that FAC has been trying (unsuccessfully) to get Florida legislators to take up for years. With lifetime registration in Florida, it is inevitable that most registrants will one day be too old, ill or demented to be able to comply with the registry requirements.

The ripple continues as many states challenge the registry in one form or another, and this is great! Baby steps but they are listening #ripple #states #registry
