OK: Sex offenders are a factor in homeless initiatives, city police say

Sex offenders pose a unique set of problems for those advocating for the homeless..

State law requires sex offenders in Lawton to register and check in with the police department every seven days, and that includes those who say they are homeless. Failure to check in can result in arrest, he said. He said some claim to be homeless, but simply don’t have a place to stay because of state statutes (registered sex offenders may not live within 2,000 feet of a facility/place with children).

There is one entity that is trying to help. Grandeur of Grace is working with veterans in the community, and that has included those who are sex offenders. Brooke Brown, executive director, said one of the services they provide is housing and for sex offenders, that typically means placement somewhere outside the city limits.

I don’t think that the weekly notification is intended for those with a permanent residence. According to the Oklahoma site “any person subject to the provisions of the Sex Offenders Registration Act who is unable to provide a mappable address with a zip code to the Department of Corrections or local law enforcement authority as required in subsections A, C and D of this section and registers as a transient shall report in person to the nearest local law enforcement authority every seven (7) days and provide to the local law enforcement authority the approximate location of where the person is staying and where the person plans to stay.” I can’t find anything about staying three hours in one place. That sounds like a sheriff’s office “policy” rather than a statute. I could be wrong.

Here’s a thought, why don’t law enforcement actually voice these issues, with law makers? Their voices speak louder, than ours apparently.

Money I suspect. Their own prejudices and the fact the sheriff’s office is an elected position. A sheriff who doesn’t look like he is tough on crime won’t be a sheriff.

Instead of trying to kill off every PFR, the various sheriff’s offices and police departments should try to find good housing for them. A good home, even if corralled into a subdivision or apartment complex, would be better than homelessness and marching up to re-register with the po-po every week.

They have to check in every 7 days? And if they are in a home more than 3 hours they assume they live there? This is pure insanity.

I’m hoping that I didn’t misread the comment from the sheriff’s office that said all registrants are required to check in every seven days. I thought that he meant homeless registrants, but the way his response was written it sounded like every registrant.
