For those who don’t know, Mark Foley was a member of the US House of Representatives representing Florida’s 16th District between 1995 and 2006… that is until it was discovered that he was texting and instant messaging sexually suggestive and lewd messages to teenage boys who were serving as congressional pages. When the messages became public, he was pressured to resign.

Mark Foley is also the encyclopedia example of a hypocrite. While in office, Foley was one of the foremost opponents of child pornography. He served as chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. He introduced legislation to change federal sex offender laws that was signed into law as part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.

Mark Foley is the classic example of a point made in this week’s weekly update; it’s better to be rich (or politically powerful) and guilty, than poor and innocent. Had anyone else done what he did, they would still be sitting in prison, not staging a political comeback. Wait… what?

According to an article in Florida Politics from earlier this week and a response from his campaign to the Federal Election Commission, Mark Foley is considering a political comeback and is spending donations to posture himself for a potential run for office.
