According to the recent 2024 report by the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability, “7% of registered sexual offenders and 12% of sexual predators list a transient address, meaning they’re likely homeless. These offenders are located in 49 of the state’s 67 counties.”
Why are so many people on the sex offense registry homeless? Because of the 196 local sex offense ordinances. These local ordinances can include up to 2500-foot prohibitions from registrants living near any place where children can gather: schools, parks, playgrounds, day care facilities, golf courses, tennis courts, community centers, amenity centers at resorts, local beaches, public swimming pools, school bus stops, churches, libraries, and so on. Where are these people supposed to live?
Probation officers are taking men and women to wooded areas and telling them that this is their new home.
Local law enforcement is acknowledging that the residence restrictions by local governments are playing a role in the “sex offender” homelessness, making it more difficult to locate them.
One of the FAC speeches being read at the delegation meetings being held throughout the state of Florida deals with this deplorable situation.
I too were almost homeless when I got out. I owned a home for 25 yrs but couldn’t live in it. If it wasn’t for Living in a mission for 2 years I would have been. I got off probation early and moved in with a friend and continued to remodel my house. I sold it near 6 years ago and moved to a home I was cleared to be at. Been out 12 years and still suffer some sort of ptsd.
You know what’s ironic? 4 years ago I was in the middle of purchasing a home and I had no where to go so I was forced to sleep behind Walmart as I was closing on my house. Who sleeps on the streets homeless as they’re going through the process of buying a home? Make it make sense.
Earth, Hitler, 1937. Earth, Stalin, 1917-1950’s. Earth, Japan 1930’s China.
Earth, American south, slavery, murder, segregation. 1600-present.
I love History. I can go on and on about history repeating itself. Someday we will be free again. There are lawyers gaining ground on our behalf. It will end. Just need more funding to pay the lawyers.
@Incognito. Hats off for getting a home. Everyone deserves a roof over their head. And thumbs down to the hoops, swamps, and road blocks created behind the scenes just to buy one. It’s un-American.
Thank you my friend. It’s been a tough journey to say the least. I wish you well in your endeavors.
@Incognito
Are you really asking the registry pukes to make something or anything about sex offender registries make sense? Similar to you but worse, a guy that I see sometimes when I register lives in the woods about 20 feet from the railroad tracks.
I wonder how many homeless people have been created by the registry? How many families have been separated due to registries? How many jobs we have lost because of registries?
I had to quit my job and go on unemployment because every job I got, someone found out about me and either got me fired or made me a monster to other workers so much so that I quit.
I get it. This whole thread and platform is therapy for some. It’s a place to understand what the heck is going on around us. Plights and accomplishments. Better to praise each other’s achievements, than criticize. A little praise goes a long ways.
