Police arrest man accused of shooting, killing convicted sex offender

25 year old Rashaud D. Watson, from Clarksville, Tennessee, turned himself into police today after he was wanted for the murder of a registered sex offender. Watson reportedly entered the man’s home, pulled out a gun, and shot the victim multiple times. He fled before officers arrived. Apparently Watson knew the victim’s daughter.

Stories are highlighting the “sex offender” angle, re-victimizing the victim, as if getting killed wasn’t sufficient.

If he killed this man because he was a registrant should be a hate crime no justice for us even in death.

Don’t count on the “sex offender” status to ever become a protected class. In order for something to be considered a “hate crime” it needs to be committed in prejudice against a protected class, such as a religious group, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender, etc.

Are you saying SO are a non protected class so we’re fair game . Maybe we should be looking into hiring our own police force and bureau of investigation since we’ re not protected under the state or federal ones.

David M, You are misinterpreting. We have the same protection as any other individual. SOs do not fall under the legal definition of a “protected class” under any state or federal law, which is defined as a group of people with a common characteristic who are afforded additional legal protections.

A sex offender who was killed because he was Muslim would be considered the victim of a “hate crime”. A sex offender who was killed because he was black would be considered the victim of a “hate crime”. A sex offender who was killed because he was a sex offender would NOT be considered the victim of a “hate crime”, but a drug dealer who was killed because they were a drug dealer would similarly NOT be considered a victim of a hate crime.
