I was considering whether to post the following or not. It’s a story from ANOTHER state in which persons required to register are becoming the victims of scams because their information is public.
I’m re-posting it, not because of the story, but because of the comments (some of which are posted below). It illustrates the need for protection from vigilantism. Even though the police know registrants are frequently targeted because of the registry, the public doesn’t care.

State police in Perry County are looking for a person who scammed a registered Megan’s Law offender. Megan’s Law requires the names and addresses of people convicted of certain sex crimes to be publicly known.
Police said they believe the suspect is calling Megan’s Law offenders and telling them they must report to the local sheriff’s office. The suspect also tells them they must pay bail money by purchasing a Google Play card and forwarding the serial number to the suspect.
Comments:
- Did any of the perps fall for this scam. These fine citizens deserve to be protected also, NOT.
- Ehhhhh, don’t look to hard
- This may be some of the justice that they deserve.
- I’d like to think “how terrible”, but I can’t …
I HAVE ALREADY BEEN THE TARGET OF THAT SCAM. However, it didn’t work. The guy claimed to be a Detective and said there was a warrant out for my arrest. He said it was for failure to comply. Then he tried to get money to make it go away. Cops don’t ask for money over the phone. And if the have a warrant on you ,they don’t tell you about it. They just come and pick you up. I called the Sheriffs’ office to report it and they sent a Deputy out to take our statement. The Deputy called back about a week later to tell us they caught the guy, still trying the same scam. I just hope there will be a trial so I can testify. The whole stinking world can hate me if they want. I don’t care. I fight back, and always will. I’m a Vietnam Vet. The world hated me for that for a long time. Hate me all you want but don’t get in my face. As SO’s we have to tolerate a lot. But we can still fight back.
@ Doug I am sorry this has happen to you. If you get a chance to speak in Court. I would use the those few minutes and speak out out about useless registry and how you are now a victim yourself
I don’t understand how people fall for this scam. If they were to call me about this. I go old school on them!I would tell them to and come and get me if you have a warrant. I would Never make a cops job easy by turning myself in.
Not one of these commenters used their real names or likenesses. Were they confronted with a real life registrant, some of them would fold.
I using my real name, I been cut with razor, Hit on the back of the head with a lock. Beating up by D.O.C staff and inmates a like three on one. I had never folded. I slept in woods bitten by ants, bugs and been rained on and felt my skin being burn by the Florida sun. I have also been hungry that I ate out trash can. I frozen my butt off during the winter months in Orlando because I could not get housing at the Salvation Army. So Jacob where you coming from buddy? The sad part I endure this for six months while People living in Florida endure this for days
Proof that no matter what a judge says we will always be 2nd class citizens. 😞 I get so made every day that I wake up because it’s just another day I have to endure this relentless punishment. My prayer every night ” now I lay me down to sleep, I pay the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
I am under the impression that any and all sex offenses are required to be on the national registry….yet , I read where the article says certain sex offenses. I felt like the author of the article was in furring only the ” worse” are registered,….not all!.
It may not have been intentionally alluded to…but that was my impression.
Some states don’t submit level ones to the national web site for public posting.
Just a thought. Could it be that the haters are either throwing up snowscreens, or are deceiving themselves of their own perverted minds?
You’re probably right. Or else it’s just internet trolls which are so common today who think it’s cute to be as mean spirited as possible no matter what the topic. Lessee…I seem to remember something someone fairly famous once said about treating others the same way one would wish to be treated oneself…
