I was considering whether to post the following or not. It’s a story from ANOTHER state in which persons required to register are becoming the victims of scams because their information is public.

I’m re-posting it, not because of the story, but because of the comments (some of which are posted below). It illustrates the need for protection from vigilantism. Even though the police know registrants are frequently targeted because of the registry, the public doesn’t care.

State police in Perry County are looking for a person who scammed a registered Megan’s Law offender. Megan’s Law requires the names and addresses of people convicted of certain sex crimes to be publicly known.

Police said they believe the suspect is calling Megan’s Law offenders and telling them they must report to the local sheriff’s office. The suspect also tells them they must pay bail money by purchasing a Google Play card and forwarding the serial number to the suspect.

Comments:

  • Did any of the perps fall for this scam. These fine citizens deserve to be protected also, NOT.
  • Ehhhhh, don’t look to hard
  • This may be some of the justice that they deserve.
  • I’d like to think “how terrible”, but I can’t …
