SCAM WARNING – Another scam with a new tactic
Maine State Police is warning of a scam that is targeting sex offenders in the state. The issue was brought to those who run the Sex Offender Registry that the scam is targeting registered people on probation in Maine. A letter is being mailed to people, claiming to be from the ‘Maine Probation Tonduary.’ The letter claims there has been a data migration error in the Records Management System and the registrant needs to email personal identifying information (PII) to an email address listed on the letter.
BE ALERT!!! If you receive a phone call, email, or letter coming from someone purporting to be law enforcement, call your local Sheriff’s office to verify. Make sure you call the actual Sheriff’s office and not the number on the letter or voicemail (this should be obvious, but…)

The domain proton.me is a highly secure, encrypted email system run by a swiss company. I find it hard to believe that if the Maine State police contacted them and showed them the SCAM letters being sent that they wouldn’t assist in identifying the owner.
I sent an email to the Proton folks “abuse” account asking them to shut down the account.
Received a reply today that the account had been shut down.
I looked it up:
“Tonduary” is not a recognized word in the English language and appears to be a term used in a scam letter claiming to be from a non-existent entity.
I completed college but someone please tell me what a Tonduary is? Must be Maine slang for a word I have heard of?
On a side note, ALWAYS call your registration office if you are not sure you are being scammed. Even though they mostly don’t care, they generally will tell you if it is not a real situation. If they do not cooperate you can always contact the FDLE, I have done so before myself for an issue my sheriff’s office brushed me off like it wasn’t their concern.
And report these to the police and insist they file a report. The only way to counter these scammers is if enough people stand up for themselves.
A Google search for “tonduary” (capitalized or not) points to a news report about scammers targeting RSOs in Maine. It’s probably supposed to sound like some legalese.
Oh, you know. Tonduary, it is like an aviary but for those really fat birds that can’t fly.
Not sure about Maine but in Florida they’d be likely asking you to break your conditions of probation since most are not allowed internet access.
Say it with me: Mail fraud.
