Sign ACLU Petition to End Mass Incarceration.

Please take a minute to support the ACLUs effort to end mass incarceration and also support an organization that supports FAC.

Here is their plea:

While you may have seen my work as Chalky White on the HBO drama series Boardwalk Empire and Omar Little in The Wire, I am not only an actor. I am also a passionate advocate for ending mass incarceration.

As a man who grew up in New York City’s public housing, I’ve lost people I love to the criminal justice system, and witnessed the harmful effects destroy entire neighborhoods. But I’ve also seen like-minded individuals make a positive difference in local communities and on a national level.

The ACLU is leading the way with a campaign to end mass incarceration in America, which intends to reduce jail and prison populations 50% by 2020. It’s very ambitious but it’s this kind of game-changing vision that made me sign on. Will you join me?

Pledge to fight our country’s crippling dependence on prisons — together we can break the cycle that’s been hurting families for generations.

Over the last 40 years, this country has been locking up far too many people, mostly black and brown men — for far too long, and for things like mental illness and drug dependency. It’s just not working.

Not only do we have bloated prisons and trillions of taxpayer dollars wasted, but we’re also cutting people off from jobs, housing, and family stability — a recipe for continued failure. The communities and individuals in these cycles of poverty, incarceration and neglect need our support.

We need better solutions to the problems our nation faces. Mass incarceration is not the answer. For example: shifting our country’s response to drug and alcohol addiction away from the criminal justice system and toward more effective, treatment-based solutions would be a great start.

We’re at a critical moment in this country, and I’m excited to work with the ACLU to push for that change.

Together, we have the chance to do better – will you join me and pledge to be a part of the solution?

It is also my privilege to tell you about our big win in California this week! We helped pass Proposition 47 which will reduce prison overcrowding and invest those savings in education, victims’ services, mental health care, and drug treatment. It’s exciting news, but it’s just the beginning.

Change in our justice system is long overdue — and momentum is on our side. Will you join us and sign the pledge?

Thank you for taking action,

Michael K. Williams for the ACLU Action team

Agree completely. It’s revenue not safety based. The “war on drugs” is a complete miserable failure and joke. We have by far the highest incarceration rates of ANY first world country. Terrible and embarrassing.
