Successes

One of our members recently suggested that people share some of their successes in dealing with the registry and/or probation with other FAC members.  These suggestions will hopefully help others to meet with more successes.

Two years ago, I read the following suggestions at our FAC website and have met with some success in following them:

  • Keep one of the neatest, most attractive homes/tents in your area.
  • Invite people over so that your neighbors can see that other people like to socialize with you.
  • Be friendly to your neighbors. If nothing else, you can give them a smile and friendly wave.  Going into seclusion can make others think you have something to hide.

Not every suggestion or positive experience will be something that will help every member, but I know that the above three recommendations helped out greatly in my own situation.  Your shared successes will be posted at our FAC website, and your name will not be used.

If you have met with some successes while being forced to register and would like to share them with our other members, please send them to [email protected] or mail them to the following address:

Treat law enforcement with respect and courtesy. They don’t want you to violate and you don’t want to violate. They’re just doing their job so if you make it easy on them then they’ll more than likely make it easy on you. I’ve had several POs over the years and all have been helpful.

You are exceptionally lucky. Many POs believe all SOs should stay in prison, and they’ll do everything in their power to put you back there. They are not your friends. They are the boot on your neck. Never forget that.

Federal PO’s don’t like returning people to prison. It requires a lot of paperwork and is an embarrassing sign of failure. No one I know in the feds has had the experience of a PO trying to find a way to return them to prison. Not sure about state.

A lot of our members would disagree with you.

POs that will do whatever it takes to violate someone on probation or parole are reasons why probation and parole need to go. If a person on probation or parole can’t find a job due to their conviction should not be used as a violation. Resources for temporary housing and find employment should be implemented allowing people to re-enter society isn’t that the goal. We all know probation and parole violations are used to keep people in the system; which is disgraceful in a “free society.”

This has been my experience as well. My frustration is more directed at the pencil and paper pushing legislators that come up with the BS registry requirements without putting any thought of how those requirements make it nearly impossible for someone without any mental illness to try to be successful much less someone who does struggle with some type of mental illness. They make all these rules and regulations and in the process cut us out of almost every type of program that can help people with a sex offense. Completely backwards process if you ask me. Yeah let’s make the community safer by ostracizing and cutting anyone out with a sex offense of any type of or available help that may be out there. Let’s just exacerbate the whole situation by imposing residency restrictions etc. for life. Every time I read about studies conducted about the registriy, they conclude that the registry does more harm than good for both the offender and the community. Yet our taxes are paying these genius legislators to come up with a better solution to help the offender not to reoffend but keep the community safe at the same time. I personally understand the thought behind the registry but it does nothing to keep the community safer and closes to door on mostly everything an offender can do to try to better themselves, be successful. There is no balance in the registry is what I’m trying to get at. Like what we say in the Army, “We are only as strong as our weakest link”. Same goes for the community.

“Going into seclusion can make others think you have something to hide.”

Actually, it’s the neighbors that are vocal, out-and-about (visible) and over-friendly that often living double lives. They are the ones that having something to hide and are trying to “sell” a facade.

Oh, and the height of your grass has little to do with your past.

Does my three legal victories over the Book Crime Family count as a success?

(Would be a bigger success if I could find an attorney willing to take my case to sue them for harassment)

Move to an apartment in a big city where people have better things to do than nose around in each other’s business.

If you have the means travel outside the country to countries that allow us in you have no idea what that does to the mind knowing that there are not people all around you trying to catch you slipping up one something ridiculous so they can jail you or worse
don’t listen to others not afflicted with being on the registry when it comes to ways of trying to handle life. they have no idea what were up against and they are trying to help but do not realize they may be making things worse

There are a few states in the US that have considerably less Draconian laws then Florida. In CO, for instance, the main SO law is that you can’t have more than one SO living in a house. I’m not sure what the logic is for that but hey – I’d take it!!!
