The picture of the driver’s license for a person forced to register in Louisiana that is given in this Reason.com article is foreboding. Just looking at the license could be argument enough for many judges to rule it unconstitutional. Unfortunately, Florida is right up there with them.
Reason.com blasts Louisiana:
- Louisiana’s tendency has always been to place additional punishment on registrants in the name of “regulations”.
- Online databases for people with a sex offense are punitive, exposing them to vigilantism and making it difficult to find employment so that housing and rehabilitation can become challenging.
- The branding of Louisiana’s driver’s licenses is an experiment in ritual humiliation.
- These licenses tell you nothing about the risk level of the registrant, leaving people to assume they are the worst of the worst.
