Survey Participation Request
Sharon Denniston, a PhD candidate in public policy is doing a study on registrants to present at the ATSA conference. She is in need of additional participants who meet certain requirements. Her post is below:
Folks,
Good news! I have enough participants in my control group now! Also, I was thrilled to get 4 new registrant or former registrant responses since Friday. Thank you so much! Keep up the good work urging people to take my study. The bad news is, I did not reach my participant count goal to complete data collection by August 1st, so now I need responses as soon as possible so I can have a valid study, do my analysis and prep for my presentation at the ATSA Conference in Montreal this October. And of course, I need to finish the last 2 chapters of my dissertation with my findings and conclusion.
I still need the following more participants to assure the validity of my findings:
8 to 10 – that are currently still registering for an offense that occurred when they were less than 18
15 – that formerly registered for an offense that occurred when they were less than 18
Again, participants must currently be between 21 and 39 years of age. Participation is online, and anonymous.
For your convenience, here’s the link to the survey that you can pass along: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JSORSurvey
Here’s what participation looks like by state so far. As you can see, many states are sorely under-represented!!
California – 1
Florida – 1
Illinois – 2
Massachusetts – 1
Michigan – 18
New York – 1
Ohio – 1
Texas – 2
Pennsylvania – 2
Tennessee – 1
Thanks again. I apologize for my persistence. I’m really hoping to drive this home as soon as possible (no later than Aug. 15th). I can’t wait to share my findings with all of you!

I think these calls for research participants are fantastic, however, in my non-scientific personal research the bigger issue (not that under 18 yr old “offenders” are not important) is the number of law abiding citizens whose lives are ruined by entrapment stings.
The low numbers above do seem low but I’m not surprised. Call for sting victims who are registered and I’m sure the numbers would be shockingly high.
Agreed – there are efforts simultaneously going on to dig into these stings.
Our thoughts… minors on the registry present a more sympathetic cause, regardless of their offense. That’s likely why, as this registry gets chipped away at, people start with the lowest hanging fruit.
A couple of years ago Nicole Pittman put out her report in Human Rights Watch and only now is a reform movement starting to make headway when it comes to politicians getting on board. The exposure Zack Anderson is getting helps.
Last year Noah Pransky put out his piece on the stings and it got traction. What we need are more victims of these stings to organize and speak out. Or, we need a politician to get caught up in one.
Agreed. I’ll choose the latter (politicians caught)
I’ve communicated with Noah… His work was good but has been set aside gif other matters while Grady Judd and his ilk waste time manipulating the law to criminalize citizens.
I’ll jump in soon enough… I’m a half-step from a better position in my life and need to get through this next few months
we’re pushing for you JR!!!!
