Useful Study: Factors Impacting upon Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders (2017)
Below is a link to an older (2017) study, but one which contains a good deal of helpful research. It’s Factors Impacting upon Attitudes Toward Sex Offenders: The Role of Conservatism and Knowledge by Michelle K. Rosselli and Elizabeth L. Jeglic from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York.
It’s a worthwhile read.

While this study is good for PFR’s it also is great for pointing out the attitudes of the majority of the masses. One thing that makes me wonder is where the study/studies were conducted. The setting and demographics play a huge role in the attitude of the outcome of any study. One thing that has always stuck out for me is that the SO Registry needs to be compared to the value of a drug offender registry. I truly believe that a drug offender registry would protect the population more and Definitely add residency requirements concerning schools and playgrounds.
I think that in conjunction with a study of this nature a similar study concerning drug usage and dealing would show that the public would want a registry and public notification about the drug abusers at least as much.
All Societies want and need a bogey man to hate. It makes them feel better and makes them believe that they are superior.
In the Prison where I was warehoused the sex offenders were not really messed with and they were pretty much left alone. Yes they were ostracized by other inmates for the most part however they also caused much less problems than the other inmates. Maybe a study on the disciplinary action in prison showing the trends between different types of convicts could be done so that the public could see which group was more likely to be a threat to public safety upon release.
Let us face the facts, due to propaganda sex offenders are the most hated criminal demographic in this country yet are not feared as much as murderers and other types of violent criminals.
People, when they find out about murderers in their neighborhood are more leery of them then they are of the SO. The general reasoning for this is that they know the person has taken a life and they are afraid that the person will find it easy to do again. Fear is the biggest failure of humanity. Fear often makes people over react. And the Politicians have found that fear of the sex offender was easy to induce and gained votes.

When you complain, you make yourself a victim. Leave the situation, change the situation, or accept it. All else is madness.” –
Great!!! Finally!!!! I have been telling leaders of our advocacy groups for years that conservatives are less likely to champion criminal justice reform and that this information should be shared among it’s members. I respect a person’s political inclinations but conservatives and their view of criminal justice reform is no secret. All you have to do is look at which candidates champion criminal justice reform and those are the ones most likely to understand our case, and have constituents that would understand as well. AI have sent the leaders of several orgs championing our cause a detailed summary, with citations that underscores this. No current Democrat or Independent President would have asked the DOJ denaturalized citizens with a sex offense subsequent to naturalization. None. I hope this is a wakeup call to those that can vote to analyze candidates more likely to reform or at least not actively sell to make laws worse. They can be identified by whether they believe in criminal justice reform and say so publicly versus those that champion “law and order” which usually means tough on crime and that means on us. Conservatives lean that way. As FAC likes to point out let us use facts, not myths.
Fascinating read. How can we tip the scales to show the reality of sex offender rather than the perceived ideas of the general public? How can we educate to lessen the fear that exists?
Do your homework, and tell people the facts, and encourage them to visit the websites that give the truth.
Also, above all, lead a life of kindness that proves to all those around you that you are not the dangerous person the public is trained to perceive you to be.
