Utah Sen. Todd Weiler says that all sex offenders are put “in one pot”.

 “We tend to kind of group those sex offenders together in the same broad brush category,“ said Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Davis County, who maintained Wednesday during a legislative committee hearing, the circumstances of the criminal acts are often very different.

Weiler, an attorney, cited the examples of an adult who rapes a young child vs. a 23 year old man who has consensual sex with a 17 year old girlfriend. The former, he said should remain on the registry, but seemed to suggest, that after a period of time, not the latter. Weiler also said adults caught in internet stings — in which they thought they were speaking to an underage person, but were really chatting with a police officer — might also be eligible for less time on the registry.
