WA: Bill proposes changes to sex offender registration for Net Nanny cases
SB 5312 proposes to reduce the sex offender registration requirement for individuals convicted in these operations to five years, provided they have no prior sex offense or kidnapping convictions.
Net Nanny operations, as described by the Washington State Patrol’s Missing and Exploited Children Task Force, are Internet sting operations designed to catch adults attempting to solicit minors online. Between 2015 and 2023, these operations resulted in 311 arrests.
Supporters of the bill including prime sponsor Sen. Lisa Wellman and several advocacy groups are expected to argue that the current system imposes excessive penalties on first-time offenders, especially when no real children are involved.
NOTE: The lowest tier under Federal Law (SORNA) is still 15 years and if one of these people moved to Florida, they would be required to register for life.

How it work if an state get the registration down to 5 years. What happen to that person if Sorna says is 15?
thanks

In Florida, the registry is for life and even continues after you die as they keep you on the Florida registry forever even after death. This is unless one of their relatives convinces them to remove the deceased from the registry. That tells you how sick minded the registration is, even dead people are on it.
I wish I knew how to submit a similar bill tailored to Florida statutes. I read the whole Washington bill and it makes sense
Is this an outgrowth of the way these came about for the WA State Patrol funding matter related to this topic and a possible state mea culpa without saying so?
Well maybe at least one group of law makers have some common sense. Even if it doesn’t affect me, I am happy someone may get some relief. Godspeed to them and hope it passes. Perhaps that would eventually lead to some more relief for others like myself who have been waiting for light years to get some relief.
