Who is policing sex offenders online?

Fort Meyers CBS Affiliate WINK News just ran a story asking who is policing sex offenders online and setting forth some pretty scary suggestions.

“The Internet, it’s a worry obviously,” Lee County Sgt. James Richard said. “People use that to either con children, make first contact. Stuff of a criminal nature, it’s easier to be behind the screen and commit crimes, then it is to do that in person.”

But Sgt. Richard, don’t people use the internet to do completely lawful things, like work, correspond with family and friends?

Also, how many online sex offenses are being committed by registered individuals vs. someone not on the registry?

When you get the answer to the above, wouldn’t it make more sense to police the internet generally, instead of focusing on a narrow group who, you will discover, are not the ones committing online offenses?

At the end of the article came a very scary foreshadowing of what’s to come. A quote from a parent of a 17 year old who said, “These people need to be identified, and blocked from all internet access, not merely social media,”

Maybe that parent should be made aware that their son has a better chance of becoming a sex offender as a result of his online activities than being harmed by one.

@ Jerry–Great comment. I don’t know. I think a lot of it has to do with the stupid redneck Republican politicians we have that get sent to Tallahassee every year. I mean, just look at the populace of North Florida all the way through the panhandle. Multiple counties with populations of 5000-no more than 25000. These county sheriffs offices are broke as hell, so they need to sell themselves to the Feds for grant money and run those scam sting operations that JV is talking about and parade it around like they’re actually fighting “human trafficking” and “protecting kids.” Look up the Federal ICAC documents and read the requirements these counties have to meet to get millions upon millions of dollars in grant money. So it’s a great incentive for Sheriff Bo Diddley Squat of Po Dunk Florida County to make himself look good and get millions of dollars for his department from the Feds. JV is right. The websites themselves such as FB, SC, and CList are snitches for them as well and let them get away with it. When will society realize this is all just the beginning of total government control over our lives, and we, the RSO’s are the guinea pigs, modern day Jews, that will be targeted first, and the most. So yeah Jerry, it’s the water too…..LOL.

What is it about Florida that has made the populous so venomous? Something in the water?

The most policing of the Florida local web based chatting lines are law enforcement themselves attempting to entrap unsuspecting offenders and not into dates with underage fake victims. So therefore news services see these quotas of on line sex stings and think that registrants ate out of control. Snapchat and Facebnok are the cops foothold in getting RSOs to reoffend. Now with internet identifiers they can hack registrants accounts to entrap as well.
