Bill introduced to Expand Death Penalty for Child Rapists

A new federal proposal introduced by Republican Representative Nancy Mace would authorize the death penalty for child sexual offenses, including rape of a minor and abusive sexual contact against children, and extend that punishment into the military justice system.

Currently, imposing capital punishment for non-homicide crimes violates the Eighth Amendment under established Supreme Court precedent (Kennedy v. Louisiana (2008)), meaning the bill would almost certainly invite lengthy legal challenges and divert time and resources from other priorities.

Expanding the death penalty does not address the underlying causes of child sexual abuse, and may worsen existing problems such as discouraging reporting — especially in familial abuse cases. FAC would argue that strengthening prevention, investigation, and support for victims would be a more constructive priority for lawmakers than pursuing an expansion of the death penalty that faces constitutional hurdles and years worth of litigation.

The only silver lining in all this is that our curent administration is too busy fighting wars and infighting over other key issues and as a result, passed the least amount of legislation so far of any administration up to this point. So this at least increases the chances that this and the medicaid ban bill will not go anywhere.

BUT I would never rest on my laurels and still watch this bill.

Mace/Luna both introduced similar legislation last year, BTW, and thankfully it went nowhere.

Some helpful perspective for PFRs, et al on the person in question of this bill and others of late. She is going scorched earth like Sherman on the way to the sea.

Anyone that promotes and utilizes personal vendettas as politcy is unfit to serve the American people. I don’t CARE what her personal experience and history is, you don’t lead by promoting a “kill’em all and let God sort’em out” mentality.

She’s just one of many lawmakers exploiting the outrage of the moment for political gain.
