Dear Abby: My fellow community group member is married to a sex offender

DEAR ABBY: I recently became aware that someone I know through various community groups is married to a man who is on the local sex offender list (involving a child under 13). This information was confirmed by another community group member as we needed to see how it would affect his volunteer status and our location near a school.

I don’t know how to respond to this information. The man is pleasant and friendly. If I had not known this information, I would have suggested he and his wife get together with my husband and other friends. There are no children in my household, so no one would be endangered by his presence.

Should this information about his sex offender status change how I see or respect him? Neither he nor his wife know that I know, and I don’t plan to tell them or anyone else. What are my responsibilities if I see him around children? — ON ALERT IN MICHIGAN

This is when the masses FLOOD her with real replies of what should be done (leave them alone unless there is a real reason to report a crime taking place) in an effort to stop the spread of misinformation and possibly see if they can get her cancelled across her audience, who are lost sheep in their own right.

What happened to the notion of “Mind your own business”? I’ve been on Florida’s registry for a cp offense (recall Girls Gone Wild) now for about 15 years WITHOUT ANY ISSUES! But I have neighbors whom I call Mrs Cravitz (the OG Karen from the TV show Bewitched). The only neighbors who have ever had a problem with me are women. Not all women in the neighborhood, but its always women getting into my personal life. I have always been forthcoming about the registration requirements when asked. It’s cost me relationships, friendships, work opportunities, etc. Despite all this, I go out of my way to be a good neighbor and to be kind and courteous. We will never stop the Karens or Cravitzs of the world. We can only be the best people possible regardless of our pasts. My question to any of the haters is: what’s in your background nobody knows about? Everyone has skeletons in their closets.

My question is….why is it that everyone out there sees as if every person in the registry is a lethal, venomous and poisonous death-loving, children meat eating monster that just a small body vapor or a mile away whiff from a registrant seems as if a nearby child will be chewed and slowly devoured and his poor innocent soul will be sent to hell to rot for eternity with absolutely no hopes to be saved? I try to keep civil when I read these kind of questions but man, sometimes it gets to me…..

Your description has nailed what society thinks in their mind about those with sex convictions while actually putting words to it. Beautifully said.

Morally and Ethically bound to report it? For what? Existing? Dear Abby is a Karen. Reporting violations of the law is one thing, but if the person has no rules against being around a minor, there’s nothing to report. Laws shouldn’t even exist that further punish people who have completed their sentence. Finality is non existent for us.

WTF no. You are not legally required to report it. Right?
