FAC Letter to Broward Sheriff Scott Israel

The following letter was sent to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. Sheriff Israel’s son, Brett, was accused of committing a sexual assault against another student in his High School. The event took place 4 years ago. Brett has not been charged and an investigation into whether there was a cover-up is pending.

Our hope is that the Sheriff might realize how easy it is for a family to become swept up in this net and take a second look at the recommendations of his task force.

A copy of our letter is below. A copy of the report and recommendations follow.

My offense was in 1991 and I have been a registered sex offender ever since the registry began. I wish the state would change the way the registry is done. Florida makes you register every 6 months. I also think they should give you the option of being taken off the registry after 10 years if there are no other offenses, given 20 years if there is a second offense and then registry for life if there is 3 or more offenses. I also think it is unfair that each city or each county can control the ordinances.

The city and county ordinances are a bureaucratic effort to instill justice with injustice and to make the local politicians feel they have a purpose.

J.G. you will need to consult with an attorney. FAC is not a law firm. We are not qualified to challenge your convictions.
