FAC Letter to Broward Sheriff Scott Israel

The following letter was sent to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. Sheriff Israel’s son, Brett, was accused of committing a sexual assault against another student in his High School. The event took place 4 years ago. Brett has not been charged and an investigation into whether there was a cover-up is pending.

Our hope is that the Sheriff might realize how easy it is for a family to become swept up in this net and take a second look at the recommendations of his task force.

A copy of our letter is below. A copy of the report and recommendations follow.

Gail, Great letter! Everything you said hits home to me as well. I once was a State Investigator for Florida, Have a MA degree, and mistakenly downloaded a file that contain child Pornography. I was charged and served 6 years, I am off of Probation, but the constraints are overwhelming. All we can do is hope that something will change, I feel sorry for your son, where as my career was ending, as I spent almost 20 years as an Investigator, now my life is completely different.

Very interesting to see if he replies or not. If it were me who had written this I would have sent copies to all news, radio stations to peek some one interested and let them to some Investigating journalism. Maybe there might be Pulitzer prize for someone

Very good letter. I hope that the sheriff has the courage to stand up to the haters who seem to enjoy watching offenders persecuted.

Great information! Many thanks Gail. One comment I might make…in Florida one does not have to be a predator to be declared one . I know from experience. I was declared one in Florida despite my licensed counselor telling the judge that was not my situation. Even in Virginia where the offenses took place I was not considered a predator. My daughter who was involved has moved to Florida and we get along just fine. Florida is too fast to judge and too slow to correct misjudgment. My daughter is now just as much a victim of Florida as I am along with numerous other RSO’s. What is Florida trying to prove?

Normally I would would write but these sort of letters require that the recipient have some human qualities such as empathy and compassion.

In this case the individual has neither of those qualities. Most of us already are perfectly aware how the police cover them and theirs so this is nothing new. It’s not the first time and nor the last.

I have long since given up expecting any sort of justice in Florida and that’s why I left Florida long ago and encourage others to do the same. There is too much corruption in Florida government and law enforcement for change.
