Is your sheriff’s office asking you to disclose additional information?

After posting a story yesterday about (which you can find here) a lawsuit in Arizona challenging a State Law that requires the registration of one’s children, we learned from some members in Marion County, Florida, that their Sheriff’s Office is doing the same.

According to member reports, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office requires the registration of people’s children (including their names and ages), their Girlfriend or Boyfriend, and anyone else living in the house.

To our knowledge and belief, that information is not required to be disclosed under Florida Statute Sec. 943.0435 or any other related statute. If anyone can find information to the contrary, please let us know.

It is our position that adding children or dating partners introduces sensitive personal data not relevant to public safety and potentially exposes the registered children and boyfriend/girlfriends to undue scrutiny or privacy violations. If you live in Marion County (or any other county in Florida where this is taking place), please contact [email protected].

The lady that sits at the registration desk in Marion told me if it’s not my car and not registered at that address they don’t want or need it. My mother was visiting from out of town and I assumed the requirement was that because the vehicle was at my house for several days it was required. She assured me it was not unless I owned the car or the DMV had it listed at my address. Still makes me nervous.

    Dear Vinnie V
If I am not mistaken you would need to give them that info – So who are they going to call to verify – You!

And yes if you have an LLC that is registered with the state that info is public and can be found on line at Sunbiz.gov and several other websites. Hope that helps

Right – I have sent a photo of the sign they have at Orange county to FAC – in the past FAC sent out letters to the offending office and the practice stopped. This sign has been at Orange County at least since DEC 2024.
I was wondering can FAC send out a letter to them.

We all are. Imagine my surprise after being on probation from 1991 to 2008 when in 1997 I was forced into the DNA collection and the registry.

Where I live, they include the make, model, and color of your vehicle on the registry website, which are NOT part of Megan’s Law requirements.
They call it ‘look-back’ information and it was started by our Attorny General.
They also have an occasional audit where they ask you questions about your appearance such as tattoos, etc. and driver’s license renewal.
I believe these things would be hard fought in a court because they would just judge that it is information that anyone could find out anyway and it is ‘to protect the public’.

        Vinnie

Florida Department of law enforcement has an entire list of things you must register. Some local sheriff’s office try and bend the rules and make up their own rules.

The FDLE rules include many requirements such as registering your work / business, Your home address, vehicles, boat and vessels, travel and a long list of other requirements. You might go a year or more without reporting something before getting caught but not worth not reporting as that might land you in prison. And saying “I didn’t know”, even if you didn’t know, is NOT an excuse per the law makers.
A simple paperwork error could land someone in jail. I once had to correct an error they made to my updates as they had not removed a vehicle from my list that I no longer owned. It took them a freaking year to remove it from my page.

There are no FDLE Rules. There are Florida Statutes that define what must be reported. If anyone wants to reference what information is required to be provided you can check Florida Statute 943.0435.

When [ was on probation. I did have to give that info to probation but not to the serriff.
    And never after probation.

But Orange county is asking for more travel info than FL state requires.

Dear Sailtime and others, you’re right in that Orange County asks for travel information that is NOT required by any laws.
