Jury seated in trial of man accused of targeting registered sex offenders
An Erath County jury of seven men and five women were seated on Monday in the trial of Charles Austin Broyles, a suspect unofficially dubbed the “vigilante shooter.”
Broyles is being tried for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with shooting a registered sex offender in the face in December 2023.
According to the arrest affidavit, Broyles was targeting registered sex offenders living in Erath County, accessing the list of names and addresses from the public sex offender website.

Hopefully he’ll survive being incarcerated. Hopefully given his criminal record he can let go of his past and grow. God knows that the state of Texas isn’t more enlightened than Florida, so there won’t be much help with his physical disability nor mental health care. So hopefully his higher power will help.
It took the jury less than an hour to convict Charles Austin Broyles. Sentencing will begin tomorrow.

Well hopefully he’ll get some therapy. It likely won’t be in prison though. I don’t have much empathy for him. I hope that he doesn’t use his disability as an excuse, because it’s not. As for him possibly being a victim of sexual abuse, I have heard to many registrants say that they were victims of abuse. The courts and public opinion have turned a blind eye to that.

Why isn’t he being charged with PRE-MEDITATED ATTEMPTED MURDER ?!?!?
He LITERALLY went on the registry web page, searched out his victim, planned his attack, and went to the registrants home with a gun to commit murder!
YOU CAN’T GET ANY MORE PRE-MEDITATED THAN THAT !!! THIS MAN WOULD BE IN THE DICTIONARY AS AN EXAMPLE DESCRIBING WHAT PRE-MEDITATED ACTUALLY MEANS!!! IF THIS HAD BEEN ANY OTHER NON-SEXUAL CRIMINAL, THE LAW WOULD BE TRYING TO GIVE HIM 25-50 AT 80%!!! AGGRAVATED ASSAULT ?!?!? 🤔 😡 HE MIGHT GET FIVE (5) YEARS WITH PROBATION AT 35% !!! 😡 😡 😡
2 to 20 years is the time he faces. I agree, not sure why this is not attempted murder. He went to three registrants’ houses and knocked on the door.
This world is just getting worse and worse. There is no end in sight. The system is irrevocably broken and it will not ever change in my lifetime. Even in death can we escape the punishment of the registry. There is only one reason for keeping people on the registry after death and those who don’t even live in the state.
I’m originally from Pennsylvania and when I went to check in there, they didn’t even want me there to register. It’s over for me in Pennsylvania but not Florida.
I love Florida and have no thoughts of ever leaving here except for some time in Pennsylvania in the hot months of summer. I would never go back to live there. I’m happy where I am. I get my four visits every year by the Sheriffs and twice to register at the sheriffs office. No one gives me any grief and are always pleasant and treat me well. Thank you for letting me vent.
I left Florida because of the harshness of the registry and law enforcement and their interpretation of the restrictions. I find it fascinating that someone would prefer Florida to another state. Best of luck to you Mr. Vail.
We don’t ask people on here what their crime was. This is not a place for shaming or judgment.
But shaming and judgment is what FAC does when it posts stories about anyone in authority being arrested or convicted of a child sex offense.

Clark, it just illustrates the point that almost every crime of a sexual nature is not committed by a person on the registry and likely will be committed by a person familiar with the family, family members, or a trusted authority figure. That category amounts for roughly 95% of all sex crimes.
Exactly the point in drawing the attention to the stats and the reality of things. If people don’t like it, tough. When the picture has been painted incorrectly for so long already, it is time to change the colors being used and paint the reality of the matter so those hiding their own skeletons are brought out into the open. FAC has not shamed anyone because that is upon the person who is being called out to feel it, not the ones posting the stats of those who are in positions of authority, calling others out, and then getting caught themselves.

I, for one, love seeing pro-registry [moderated] get busted for registerable offenses, be it a registry officer, a pandering politician, a so-called victim advocate, or a lowlife vigilante.
