Men’s Group Meeting Topic: Can’t Find A Job? Work for Yourself
The FAC Men’s Discussion and Support Group meets monthly on the Second Tuesday at 7pm ET via Zoom online or by phone. Specifically for Men Forced to Register, the group is called BRITE (Brothers Restoring Identity, Talents and Engagements) and it focuses on topics that change barriers into opportunities. This month, the Topic is “Can’t Find a Job? Work for Yourself” facilitated by FAC members who have successfully built their own businesses.
It starts with knowing the type of work that you enjoy, and how to turn it into a business with steady income. If you have considered launching a business, and aren’t sure how to start, join this call for support.
All callers will be asked to identify yourself by FIRST NAME AND COUNTY ONLY. FAC membership will be verified, or you can request to become an FAC member before the call starts. Unknown callers will be removed.

The background check is the one thing that creates the barrier. My offense was over 10y ago and doesn’t show up but my registry status does. One thing I have learned though is that sometimes it out of the hiring managers hand. Ive been told by places that they would love to hire me but my registry status causes issues with their insurance.
Well, here’s the deal: I can help with this because remote work has been the biggest success I’ve had. One approach is finding temporary work that can eventually turn into a full-time position.
In most corporate structures, the hiring managers are separate from the HR department. To be honest, your direct manager and scheduling staff often do not know about your criminal record — only the HR department and the people who actually need access to that information do.
A lot of companies now outsource their background checks. My current employer used the same company that DoorDash uses. My record did come back, but it included a risk assessment, and mine was considered low risk because I work remotely. I was also hired through a temp agency that used a different outsourced background check company, and being honest throughout the process helped.
Another important skill is learning how to search for jobs online and filter through the spam postings. There are a lot of fake or misleading listings out there, so knowing how to spot legitimate opportunities really matters.
I want to help create something like this. Being ex-military, I understand the importance of trust, credibility, and safety. People in this situation need a trusted source they can turn to without fear of being targeted, judged, or put on a “hit list.”
I believe there should be workshops to help people build resumes, prepare for interviews, and connect with employers willing to hire those with past convictions, specifically PFRs. I already know a few remote employers who were willing to look beyond my past and give me an opportunity. There are others too, but many companies simply do not understand the reality of rehabilitation or the value someone can bring when given a second chance.
Part of this effort should focus on bridging that gap — educating employers on the benefits of hiring someone who is motivated to rebuild their life, stay stable, and contribute positively. Companies should see the value, loyalty, and work ethic many people in this position can bring.
Right now, there are very few resources, and fear has divided and isolated much of the sex offender community. Many people are afraid to speak up, network, or support one another because of stigma and backlash. But we need to stand together and show that we are not trash — we are human beings who want the opportunity to work, provide for ourselves and our families, and contribute to society if given a fair chance.
One idea is get hired at a small business that actually has an owner who is IN the building, not at home sleeping. That way, if the owner hires you, no one can fire you but the owner, not just a manager. Having said that, that doesn’t mean you won’t be treated bad.
Wish we had our own version of a green book, where people on the registry help each other by utilizing their services. It would keep more wealth within our group of supporters and help minimize the efforts of outsiders to financially punish us.
If someone were to start this, it would have to be printed and distributed securely, or online through verified channels like FAC membership.
We don’t need to inadvertently create another hit list for outsiders so they can target our businesses too.
I always wanted to work in the retention or job placement side of things. Was in contention at Wounded warrior project for this role for I have attended, built, and also have helped many with not just resume building- but also job placement, coaching for interview in STAR method. Its time consuming but once you get the methodology behind it it comes easy. Does FAC have a coordinator line this and also talent scout to help place people in roles know? Or even a workshop to help this ?
I do know a temp agency that hires nationally. They do remote alot and hired me with my background. Now I had a leg to stand on since colorado does 7 year felony search. But they asked about the sex offense wrote a note and through a background check with sterling. But also for this resumes need to he up to par with current STARS method alot of corporate is using. There is alot to learn there too in building a resume to get past the AI models tp get a real person. I’ve had sucess with this
