Men’s Group Meeting Topic: Can’t Find A Job? Work for Yourself

The FAC Men’s Discussion and Support Group meets monthly on the Second Tuesday at 7pm ET via Zoom online or by phone.  Specifically for Men Forced to Register, the group is called BRITE (Brothers Restoring Identity, Talents and Engagements) and it focuses on topics that change barriers into opportunities.  This month, the Topic is “Can’t Find a Job? Work for Yourself” facilitated by FAC members who have successfully built their own businesses.

It starts with knowing the type of work that you enjoy, and how to turn it into a business with steady income.  If you have considered launching a business, and aren’t sure how to start, join this call for support.

All callers will be asked to identify yourself by FIRST NAME AND COUNTY ONLY.  FAC membership will be verified, or you can request to become an FAC member before the call starts. Unknown callers will be removed.

This is very timely. I’ve applied for hundreds of jobs since my release in July. And I was always honest when asked if I had a felony. I even had a few where I worked anywhere from three days to three weeks. But as soon as someone higher up the food chain got wind of my backgroud, I was let go.

So I recently started a home-baking business and need all the help I can get.

It has been 22 years since I was on probation, but one thing I liked was the probation officer gave us a list of companies that hired felons/ex-felons, those on probation or on house arrest.

Also, you can go online, and they also have a list of companies that hire felons. Depending on your crime, I guess they could pick and choose if they want to hire you.

I haven’t worked in 10 years now since I am disabled and unable to physically work. I miss the paycheck but enjoy waking up on my own terms or sleeping in if I am not feeling well without repercussions.

I’m not a member but I would like to hear everyone’s thoughts on businesses we could create.

Join the call Derek. One reason for requiring FAC membership is so we can verify who is on the call. Your support and work in this arena is well known and appreciated by FAC and our members. Looking forward to your participation on the Men’s call.

You must be hyper vigilant about starting your own business. Especially a handyman service or junk removal business.
I used to do that type of work. I got set up twice when some of the (good old boys) types decided to rough up a pred as they called it.
Neither time worked out well for them. The first instance got scary because I wasn’t on guard going in. But it worked out well for me. I was able to extricate myself from the situation without being damaged.
The second time I spotted the trap before it could occur. Then I called in about 50 code violation on the property.
I did support my family by this type of work, but be vigilant of traps people.

If you do go into business for yourself, make sure you can legally operate the type and scope of business you want. For example, some counties have made it very difficult if you have pickups and deliveries or do work at client’s homes. Also, just because you have a corporation as a shield for some operations doesn’t mean you can skip the court ordered rules of your probation, such as driving through a school zone or doing work in proximity to a place you’re not supposed to be. Be safe and follow good business practices.
