MI: Sex offender registry update passes state Senate
The Michigan Senate voted Tuesday to update the state’s sex offender registry laws to comply with a recent federal court ruling.
The decision blocked increased reporting requirements for people convicted before new, tougher laws took effect. The court also declared unconstitutional a provision that allowed the state police to decide if an out-of-state crime warranted reporting.
The matter has been in near-constant litigation in some manner for years. Brinks conceded the issue could still come up again.
“I’m not 100% sure that this will settle it. But I think that we’ve done our part today to make sure that we are in compliance with this most recent court case,” Brinks said.

A problem with Florida is the vagueness of classification. The Florida registry punishes offenders and predators with impunity. A registrant who answered a Craigslist ad compared to someone who had multiple victims for example. In Florida the laws themselves blur the lines between what constitutes an offense and a predatory act. That being said, not all of those convicted are the same. My offense was a one time thing thirteen years ago. There are others here whom were retroactively placed on the registry long after they had finished their adjudication. No one here advocates for committing a crime. We’re trying to fix an absurd problem based on fear that does nothing to prevent sex crimes and protect children.
I agree. Being retroactively forced to re register after 17 years removed. That is why I’m here. That is not justice. That’s cruel and unusual punishment.
You can’t deny the list is not punishment. But it is. I’m living proof of it. 29 years later after the fact. One week affair with an underaged girl who looked like 20.
How many success stories have been ruined with retroactive application?
I hope it’s higher than the bad one’s.
The war on sex is a bad idea. Repeal the registry. Its uncivilized. Unconstitutional.
