New Law Takes Effect Today in Missouri Providing Relief to Some Registrants
A new law goes into effect in Missouri today that allows some people required to register as sex offenders to petition for removal. Previously, Missouri, along with 16 other states, had a one-size-fits-all approach that kept everyone on the registry for life.
They learned the system was unmanageable and implemented a tiered system that is offense based. The three tiers are 15 years, 25 and Lifetime. The sponsor of the law, Rep. Kurt Bahr, said the change was designed to encourage registrants not to re-offend.
Florida still has lifetime registration for all. We need to keep pushing for that to change.

All states need reform, reclassifacation, and abolish public registration.
At this point, it’s been 20 years since my husband’s offense of statutory rape. He’s been out of incarceration and off of probation for 12 years. All life on the registry does at this point is to keep him from finding gainful employment. Now, our two children are almost school age. Even though he is still able to do most of the normal parent related activities, we always worry about what will happen if someone finds out. Will our children be ostracized in school? I chose him despite the limitations because he is my soul mate and a good person. I do fear for my children’s safety though. They don’t deserve to live with his record. But as many families know, your whole family is branded.
I wish Arizona would do this
Please….
Florida will never change there laws to much money would be lost.it is a very profitable business incarcination
A tiered system is badly needed. The offender roles are swelling beyond belief with folks that never intended to offend in the first place or committed some minor offense ages ago and have had a boot on their throat ever since. So many states have figured that out. Even Georgia has a way out that doesn’t involve death.
