Another chance to Vote: Do you think “sex offenders” can be rehabilitated
Last month members chimed in on whether a registrant should be involved in civic life and we were successful in making sure the poll reflected our voice.
A new poll from California’s KMPH Fox 26 News asks a simple question: Can people on the sex offender registry be rehabilitated?
The data says yes. But systems like Florida’s say no — imposing lifetime consequences, no matter how much someone changes.
So what do you believe? If you believe people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done and have the capacity to change, make sure your vote is counted. If you believe in accountability and redemption, make sure your vote is counted. And if you want the public to know that there are people out there who believe people on the registry can be rehabilitated, VOTE YES NOW!!!

Just voted…and WOW…500 votes in and only 28% say PFR’s can be rehabilitated. Not a good public opinion
Vote!! YED!
EVERONE CAN CHANGE!!
We have said before, it is not about rehabilitation because they do not want us to be successful. Every time someone is removed from the registry, they lose some funding. It may not be much but adds up and they for sure do not want everyone getting off once they are eligible.
And on that subject, they keep making it harder not only to be removed, but to even live one day at a time without getting arrested.
Happily voted. Comments are open too at the bottom of the article’s page.
Yes, do vote. At the moment, of 480 votes 73% indicate that former sex offenders can’t be rehabilitated and 27% believe they can. If a fraction of the people reading this post were to vote, the ratio could easily be reversed. I suspect that the Karens and Darrens have already voted.
As “No Hope” posted, the question itself is absurd and points out how misinformation has permeated the public mindset. By using the blanket term “sex offender” the question ignores the broad range of crimes that might place someone on the registry. Use of that term also ignores all of the statistics regarding low recidivism and that well over 90% of childhood sexual abuse is perpetrated by persons close to the victim. I consider articles such as this as mere click bait. They are certainly not meant to inform.
Voted. It’s a tuna net salad sandwich.
Sorry, but I don’t identify with a universal label. And the girl involved would say leave him alone. The district attorney in my case( long retired) says this was not known then how it would change. His belief was 10 years and done. He was apologetic about being retroactively forced to reregister.
I told him about the death threats. He said that should never happen to anyone ever.
Sigh.
People think automatically that everyone listed is evil and will do more evil always. I had custody of my 1st daughter and never lost custody through the process. She’s in her 30’s now. lol. Go figure that one out!
My daughter is upset I’m relisted. She says dad you proved everyone right who gave you a chance in court back then. She watched me clean toilets, do jobs I hated to survive. She watched me lose jobs because of the list. Plumber apprentice. Electrical apprentice. Etc…Once off the list I became an accountant. Night school. Got married.
So you see how we have all been judged in court one way or the other. Levels of evil are dealt with. The universal truth is discovered in court. We don’t deserve any further punishment of a universal registry. This was my American second chance.
Unfortunately I have lost all I have achieved since being re listed. For the second time in my life.
Suicide comes to mind. And passes. Why? Because Florida has a false EXIT door off the registry. It gives you no hope for relief and recovery. No one envisioned this outcome 30 years ago. The whole SORNA and individual States scheme is a mess. It’s not universal at all. It’s un American.
Do people really change? Of course they do.
