We just received word that the ACLU is going to oppose HB 987
HB 987 is the bill we mentioned in yesterday’s call to action. It would require persons required to register pre-report to the Sheriff’s office in the county in which they intended to stay in a hotel/motel/vacation rental 48 hours before their stay and would require the hotel/motel/vacation rental to notify every guest that a “sex offender” was staying there. They would also have to notify every guest if a person required to register were staying within 1000 feet of the location.
Thank you, ACLU!
Continue to make calls to Representatives and urge them to Vote NO on House Bill 987. You can find here Florida House of Representatives Complete List.
Food For Thought……
The Draconian Measures that the State of Florida is now churning up is probably a result that most local Sheriff’s Offices, Like Grady Judd, aka Elmer Fudd, can NO LONGER CREATE STINGS…the frontpages, back pages, and nasty craigslist websites CAN NO LONGER HOST LEPERS LIKE a GRADY JUDD…..so, therefore, in an effort to continue to fill county jails and state prisons, they are resorting to these HITLER-LIKE initiatives…at the END of the Day it is about MONEY…to make sure that the State of Florida has the biggest amount of donut eating whores!…especially in the panhandle of florida that has the highest amount of incarceration of people…all those people that work in law enforcement are INBREDS…they breed their own to justify there overweight existence…facts are facts
make it TASTY DAY
Whew…..so glad you guys are FINALLY starting to get it!!! That’s it in a nutshell. Makes me have absolutely ZERO respect for any of em
On the bright side Registers living 1000’ from deep pocket resorts will see property value tripple.
. If hotels could post “ No ….Offenders welcome what do you think is next. Restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores. People will eventually start to protest stores that allow registers like they did dicks sporting goods over firearm issues. Soon we will have to abide by these signs. “Willfully and knowingly entered a posted establishment punisble by up to 15 years of prison…children to be raised by potentially bad people. These laws have harmed more children and good people than it’s protected. Which kid is harmed more a 15 year old that wants to have sex with an 20 year old or 3 kids raised in that same sex offenders home stigmatized since kindergarten as having a monster for a dad or mom and the mental wear of the cops showing up 4 times a year, social pressure not being able to be on the good sports teams or after school activity shunned away from after school groups ect.. I can tell you which. I can tell you what it’s like sitting on the edge of my bed nights weighing the options what’s best for my children how would my wife take it if I leave or stay and how they’d survive with just their mom what might happen a single parent home who might be the new dad ect ect ect. My only victims are my family and friends. My state appointed victim is victim only cause she had to live with what her and I actions have caused. Her kids have grown up a good life. Other guys who did the same thing now are prominent people and those girls they dated I know them aren’t laying victim but have great family’s and pillars in the community. Financially I’ve surpassed 99 percent of them but socially I’m trailer trash as well as my kids. They even have problems as young adults dating in fear someone will know who thier dad is and how will they have a wedding and dancing so naturally they seek lower water I hate it. Believe me I wouldn’t have started a family in these time. Back then I went and had lunch with my kids at school coached ball, birthday party’s little by little it’s gotten bad for us road blocks and twist and turns. Soon dads gonna be arrested again for not registering a vehicle on time or forgetting to register having a garage sale in yard not listed as employeement and 99 percent of the attorneys gonna be real helpful with a deal for a monitor for 2 years or in prison. “Where’s your dad?” “Oh he’s on a business trip” you tell me who victims are and has to live behind this vail.
My thing is this. Just resist. Do what you want. Go where you want. F**k these bastards. We need to just stop getting worked up over this crap. Live your life, and dont these government morons a 2nd thought. If they pass it, who gives a fuk. Go on vacation in another state and stay there. My thing is why isn’t the tourism and hotel industry in Florida raising a stink about this? It’s more work for them to do and more training for their employees, and is just overall bad business for their industry if they have to announce this every time an RSO stays there. Another way around this is just have a friend or family member get the room for you. Problem solved. No one has no clue you’re there……You guys are too worried about following these idiots rules. They’re nothing but criminals and crooks themselves. So I have no intention of doing what they tell me to do anyway.
This is my opinion and wont be endorses by this site and may or may not even get published. But you know what, I’m tired of bending over like a lost sheep and taking it. I’ve had enough!
Unlike the U.S. Constitution, the Florida Constitution provides citizens with an explicit right to privacy:
Article I, Section 23 of the Florida Constitution states:
“Right of privacy. — Every natural person has the right to be let alone and free from governmental intrusion into the person’s private life except as otherwise provided herein. This section shall not be construed to limit the public’s right of access to public records and meetings as provided by law.”
This provision of the Florida State Constitution could provide grounds for a state court to strike down the law (were it to pass), as the notification provision would be a gross violation of that right, especially when there is no prior judicial finding of dangerousness on the part of the offender (hotel guest). This law would therefore violate the individual right to privacy as enshrined in the Florida Constitution without due process of law.
RM – if this disaster of a bill passes, rest assured it will be in court within months.
Who is the friendly comrade that sponsored this bill?
and would require the hotel/motel/vacation rental to notify every guest that a “sex offender” was staying there.
This will prompt the hotel industry (private businesses) to implement policy on banning registered citizens from staying at their establishments. Similar to the policies that Facebook has in place. Think about it, a business would not want their guests to panic and leave or never come back to the hotel, but would rather be easier for them to not have the sex offender staying their in the first place to avoid notifying other guests and creating unnecessary panics.
One would think the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association lobby group would be vehemently opposed to this bill as it would be bad for business, and the costs associated with notifying all guests would become cumbersome.
Im calling this one “TEAMWORK”! I would like to think that all of our calls made people including the ACLU pay attention.
The passive- aggressive side of me has already considered the MANY trips I would be taking during which I would be staying next to major hotels and resorts only to realize about 12 hours before my actual departure that I would need to cancel. It really would be too bad for those places as they probably wouldn’t get the cancellation info in time to not have to notify their guests.
I wonder how this would play into the court order that specifically exempts me from public and community notification?
How is it that one has to Complie with anything, from the time, of the Judges Gavel?
The language of the bill says not only do lodging establishments have to notify guest if there is a SO staying at the establishment but also if there are any SO’s within 1000ft of the establishment.
From the text of the bill it appears that the author is seeking to keep tabs on all Registered Citizens at all times. Hotels and public lodgings must post links on their advertising banners and webpages to the FDLE SO website. It doesn’t specify which web page will display the link. They really didn’t do their planning. This will cost public lodgings money to pay for electronic website updates and coding. Not to mention putting customers in an awkward situation. I can just picture the front desk at check in: “Thank you Mrs. Richards for coming to vacation with us here in sunny South Florida. And if you see any Sexual Offenders or Predators here, feel free to report them anonymously on our easily accessible link to FDLE on our website. Enjoy your stay!”
I am still waiting with intense suspense for the day they propose implanted GPS on all Registered Citizens.
Thank you so very, very much ACLU for opposing this draconian and unconstitutional attempt at legislative over-reach. As is so often the case, these types of last-minute additions are ineptly written and those favoring them have clearly not thought through the potential consequences of the poorly-conceived legislation.
One of the consequences of this bill, if passed, is that wherever a sex offender resides within 1000 feet of a hotel (for example, if it is his permanent residence), that hotel would perpetually be required to post his sex offender flyer on its premises, which could be the death knell for that hotel. The number of hotels that would be affected just in downtown Miami and Miami Beach alone is mind-boggling. This law, as written, would require almost all hotels in those areas to permanently post multiple flyers on their premises. Just do a sex offender search in downtown Miami and South Beach and see how many registered citizens pop up (and that is not even considering transient offenders whose registered “address” is within 1000 feet of a hotel). It is inconceivable that the hotel lobby would allow this to pass. It imposes a much greater burden on them than on sex offenders.
So if I have to travel for business and stay at a hotel where a number of my professional colleagues are staying, I will be “outed” to the entire corporation. This is outrageous!
Yes
Don’t forget you will have to arrive at least 48 hours before checkin to register with the sheriff… and I guess sleep in your car until time to check in..
Once the autonomous vehicles come out, we can all move into driverless RVs and live on the highway! The other oddity is that although hotels are off limits, one can nurse a soft drink all night at 24-hour diner. Is this a better alternative? Oh, next restaurants will be off limits, then grocery stores, then…, I get it! The only place for someone whose sentence is complete to live is, jail! It does seem like a new sentence!
Good DAY, JJJJJ….This is against the Commerce Clause of the US Constitution that allows citizens to conduct commerce….this is above and beyond reproach…this is similar to the NAZIS back in the day…HITLER-Like…..Any Registrant who still has a great paying job, (few of us do-not me anymore), will get ZINGED…..I used to make over $300K a year and now make barely $50K a year….basically paid the same wage as a ‘pimply faced teenager flipping burgers’
sad sad scene….question is how do we prohibit this?..how do those with great work experience and education defend ourselves?
At least that gives notice to Florida that the bill WILL be challenged on constitutional grounds.
