It was one of the funniest episodes of Sasha Baron Cohen’s Showtime Series, “Who is America”. Cohen, disguised as Israeli “Colonel Erran Morad”, interviews former Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore. During the interview he shows Moore a device purportedly used by the Israeli military to detect pedophiles. Whenever the device goes near Moore it goes off!
The gag wasn’t so funny to Roy Moore, who is now suing Cohen, Showtime and CBS for 95 Million Dollars in damages!!! In his complaint, which can be read here; https://www.scribd.com/book/387909143/Roy-Moore-Showtime, he alleges that his portrayal as a sex offender, “has severely harmed Judge Moore’s reputation and caused him, Mrs. Moore, and his entire family severe emotional distress, as well as caused and will cause Plaintiffs financial damage,”
But Mr. Moore, the harms you describe; “severe emotional distress” and “financial damage” sound horrible. How can that be when status as a “sex offender” is not supposed to be punishment? Didn’t now Justice Roberts of the US Supreme Court once equate it to being a “Price Club” member? How can you justify ninety-five million dollars for what is supposed to be no more onerous than filling out an application at Price Club?
I see Too that Roy Moore was accused of sexually molesting a young lady in 1979 when he was 32 and she was 14. The court refused to hear the case.
Ahhhh…. The skeletons rattle, the bones fall out of the closet.
No wonder why Mr. Moore was so paranoid about that “meter”
Does the truth hurt much?
But in his defense, no charges were brought (covered up by a pay off probably)
I just wonder how far this case would have gotten if he had a Public Pretender instead of a high-falootin’, big buck bank of attorneys. (Plea bargain anyone?)
“What a person sows they shall reap” Galatians 6:7 I guess the Judge has a taste of that label of what it truly means
The evidence against Moore was thin at best, the strongest piece being an innocuous yearbook signing that was assessed as a likely forgery (Sorry, I need more than he said – she said). Given the whole matter dropped after the Senate election he ran in was over, the whole thing was likely trumped up. In that regard, I feel for Moore and figure all registrants should as well, regardless of political leanings.
That’s not to say I agree with this frivolous lawsuit. He’s a public figure, it’s a TV show. Unlike registrants, he asked to be in the public eye when he ran for office.
Get over it, Roy.
Wish every juror felt that way about “he said, she said” evidence, because that is all the evidence produced against most people who go to prison on a CSC charge. The man’s excuse for dating an underage girl was that he had permission from the girl’s mother. The matter was dropped because the charges were based on events decades earlier, and he can afford high-priced lawyers. I feel for those who face such charges without the benefit of decent legal representation. At one point, both Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan called for Moore to withdraw from the race because the MULTIPLE accusers were believable. It wasn’t just one “he said, she said” allegation.
WADR, multiple she-saids aren’t any more persuasive. Particularly in Moore’s case. A bit too coincidental that all of them couldn’t hold it in anymore running up to the election, then decided to drop it once the election was over.
All – As an organization comprised in large part by people who have themselves done wrong, we should not be passing judgment on others. Please focus on our mission.
My comment was intended to show the unfairness of a system that constantly allows judges and lawyers and police officers and politicians and celebrities to get away with accusations and conduct that put poorer people behind bars for decades. Surely that fits into the mission of getting society to treat citizens fairly. Large numbers of sex offenders in Florida aren’t homeless just because of registry restrictions. Poverty is the bigger roadblock. Poorer people are more oppressed by sex offense laws at all stages than are richer and well-connected people. For example, even though Bill Cosby was convicted on April 26th, he has been free this entire time awaiting sentencing later this month. The one million dollar bond he posted is pocket change for him. Poor defendants have cuffs slapped on them in the courtroom when they get convicted of CSC, and are taken directly to jail. Far too often, justice is unequally applied in this country. If that isn’t part of our mission, it should be.
It is said that in this country it is better to be rich and guilty than poor and innocent.
There are thousands of “he said she said “ cases where someone ends up on the registry because of not being able to get a good enough attorney.
Not only is the man incredibly stupid but has absolutely no sense of humor even worse!
Nothing more than a frivolous lawsuit.
Did appear to me however that his pedophile detector was working quite well.
I got a chance to watch that video. What surprised reporters the most is that Moore didn’t realize right away that it was a phony setup to make him look stupid, which it did. Moore looked like he believed the device was real. The truth is, his own conduct had already been the cause of his family’s emotional distress. For anyone who isn’t familiar with allegations against Moore, here is a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Moore_sexual_misconduct_allegations
Moore served as Chief Justice on the Alabama Supreme Court. Another self-righteous politician who was hiding skeletons in his own closet.
AMEN, AMEN, AMEN and AMEN!
