Parents nationwide have been fed misleading headlines touting the results of operation “Southern Impact II” which purportedly “nabbed 76 child-sex predators” and in which “13 children were rescued or identified as victims”.

Without more, those are some scary numbers and what appears to be a very successful “operation”, but if you dig below the surface, it’s not so successful after all… For example; the phrase, “rescued or identified as victims”. Which is is? Were they rescued or did they merely “identify” them as victims? That makes a big difference.

Then let’s analyze the 76 arrests. Consider that number in the context of the following stats:

  • Operation Southern Impact II, was coordinated by nine (9) Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces.
  • The results were the results across eight (8) states.
  • The planning for Operation Southern Impact II began approximately 4 months ago.
  • A total of 222 law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies participated in the operation.
  • 736 digital devices were previewed and 1,255 digital devices were seized
  • A number of arrests were made that were not directly related to child pornography but rather as a result of the investigative actions taken during Operation Southern Impact II. More specifically, these arrests consisted of offenders that were found to be non-compliant with the terms of previous criminal sentences (ie: registration violations).

So over the course of four months and involving 222 law enforcement agencies across eight states, investigating a couple thousand electronic devices, they generated only 76 arrests – a number of which were for “technical violations” of registry laws?

I’d like to know how may of those arrest will stick and, more importantly, how much money was invested in this operation! Those are numbers we’ll undoubtedly never know.
